Man charged with DUI after hitting police car

A 29-year-old man was jailed on drunken driving charges early today after he hit a state police cruiser in Rehoboth Beach.

No one was injured.  He was charged with DUI, failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to yield, improper lane change, leaving the scene of a property collision crash, failure to provide information at a collision scene and failure to have vehicle registration, insurance identification and drivers license in his possession.

The incident occurred about 1:15 a.m. at Coastal Highway and Annie-B Street, in Rehoboth, said state police spokesman Cpl. Bruce Harris.

State police Cpl. Kyle Archer was driving south on Coastal Highway when a 1998 Subaru Legacy, operated by Herlihy, attempted to turn south onto Coastal Highway from Annie-B Street. The Subaru then hit the driver’s side mirror of the police cruiser and kept on going.

The officer then activated the patrol car’s emergency equipment and stopped him a short distance away and arrested him.

Tragedy in South Africa – Nelson Mandela’s Great Granddaughter Killed

Today tragedy struck pre-world cup when Nelson Mandela’s 13 year old great granddaughter Zenani was killed in an auto accident by a drunk driver leaving the World Cup Opening concert extravaganza. Nelson Mandela will not be attending the opening ceremonies anymore, a sharp contrast from his iconic appearance and boldness at the rugby World Cup in 1995.

It is sad what has occurred, and that South Africa’s hero will not be able to attend the opening game of the World’s biggest sporting event. Whoever this drunk driver was, he will most likely never live it down, the guy’s life is probably over, a terrible misstep in judgment on his part.

State trooper dies driving wrong way on Schuylkill Expressway

The tragic circumstances sound almost like bad fiction:

A veteran state trooper – renowned for reconstructing highway crashes and nabbing drunken or negligent motorists – dies in a head-on collision while driving the wrong way on the Schuylkill Expressway in the middle of the night.

And the death of State Police Cpl. John Quigg Jr. came just eight hours before he was due Wednesday morning in Montgomery County Court on his own drunken-driving charge.

The crash seriously injured the other driver, Chantelle Harper, described by a family friend as a gifted young Rosemont College graduate bound for law school.

State police, saying the collision was under investigation, would not comment on whether alcohol or other factors might have placed Quigg, 48, in the wrong lane. Nor did they immediately know where or how fast he was going.

The accident compelled investigators to close the eastbound lanes of the Schuylkill for several hours overnight.

“The loss of Quigg has stunned all of us,” said Trooper Danea Durham, spokeswoman for the state police’s Belmont barracks, where Quigg worked. “I’ve always found him to be one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve known here.”

But shortly after 1 a.m., Quigg drove his 10-year-old Honda Accord the wrong way onto the expressway from the eastbound Spring Garden exit in Philadelphia, police said.

Moving west in the eastbound lanes, Quigg’s car struck a 1994 Mercury Marquis driven by Harper, 23, of South Philadelphia. Unlike Quigg, she was wearing a seat belt.

Harper was listed in good condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after surgery for leg injuries. Quigg was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Photographs from the scene showed severe front-end damage to both vehicles.

Black said the large size of her car probably protected her. “If she was driving anything else, she’d be dead.”

Montgomery County man convicted in vehicular homicide case

Lower Gwynedd man convicted in vehicular homicide case

COURTHOUSE — A Lower Gwynedd man showed little emotion Wednesday as a judge determined his intoxication contributed to crashing his car and killing a passenger friend after a night out drinking.

The defendant was convicted in Montgomery County Court of charges of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol, homicide by vehicle, recklessly endangering other persons, DUI and reckless and careless driving in connection with the 2:49 a.m. Jan. 3, 2009, crash along Swedesford Road in Upper Gwynedd.

The crash claimed the life of 20-year-old Philadelphia man, who was a front seat passenger in the defendant’s Honda Civic.
The defendant and another Philadelphia man who was the rear seat passenger, were injured in the crash.

Judge Thomas C. Branca rendered the verdict after a three-day non-jury trial. Branca immediately revoked defendant’s bail.

“It’s OK,” defendant mouthed to his stunned father as sheriff’s deputies handcuffed him and escorted him to the county jail where he will remain until he is sentenced in August.

The case involving a young person who made poor driving decisions might have provided a lesson to some Pottsgrove High School students who observed some of the testimony and the verdict during an educational trip to the courthouse on Wednesday.  Courtesy of CARL HESSLER Jr., The Times Herald.
